I have to say, I find the character I am developing quite unique and interesting, even to me, her creator. Her name is Erin Nightwalker. Yes, she is of Native American lineage. She has kept her maiden name because her now deceased husband insisted she should in honor of her heritage. She works undercover and is rough around the edges but has a vulnerable and tender side she tries to keep hidden. She is practical, yet sometimes finds help and support through the beliefs and practices of her ancestry. Erin drinks wine out of paper cups but chooses to imbibe her favorite poison, scotch, especially single malt, from fine crystal. What she drinks and drinks from is a reflection of what kind of day she has had. So, for Erin, I have put together some things you might not know about Scotch whisky. *Yes, there is a difference between scotch and Scotch whisky. (To keep reading, click on continue reading below)
Things Erin Would Know About Scotch Whisky
- What is Scotch whisky?
It is a malt or grain whisky made in Scotland. Did you notice the whisky spelling as opposed to whiskey? See why in # 2.
- Whiskey or whisky?
Depends on where it was made. Whiskey refers to spirits made in the United States and Ireland. Whisky (no “e”) is the preferred spelling in Scotland, Japan, Canada, and the rest of the world. But there are exceptions! George Dickel, Old Forester, and Maker’s Mark make whisky, not whiskey.
- Are there laws about making Scotch whisky?
Yes. All Scotch whisky must be made in the manner that is specified by law.
4. The official regulations of Scotch whisky by the Scotch Whisky Association is quite lengthy. Below are some highlights.
a) has been matured only in oak casks of a capacity not exceeding 700 liters
b) has been matured only in Scotland
c) has been matured for a period of not less than three years
d) has a minimum alcoholic strength by volume of 40%
e) And hmm, a person must not manufacture any whisky in Scotland except Scotch Whisky.
5) Why is it scotch and Scotch whisky?
Because you have a scotch at the bar (not a proper name). And you like to drink Scotch whisky, not Irish whiskey.
Confused? So is almost everyone else. Cheers!
